Map a Drive Letter to a Folder the Easy Way in Windows

Have you ever needed to repeatedly access a folder that is nested deep inside a giant hierarchy of folders? Sure, you can always create a shortcut to that folder, but did you know you can actually assign a drive letter to a folder instead? Today we'll show you how to do this.

This ability has existed in Windows via the subst command for quite a while, so this will also work for you XP users as well.

Map a Drive Letter the Easy Way

The easiest way to assign a drive letter to a folder is to use a simple utility called Visual Subst, which gives you a nice graphical interface to assign drive letters, but also does something that the command line version can't… you can set your virtual drives to apply again at startup.

You can download and run the utility without needing to install it, and then simply use the Browse button to select your path, and click the green plus symbol after choosing the drive letter.

At this point you should see the drive letter show up in the list. (Note that you can delete it by highlighting and choosing the red X icon, or change the path / letter by using the Save button.

If you want to save the drives, you'll want to select the "Apply virtual drives on Windows startup" option.

Now when you open up your Computer window, you should see the new drive show up in the list.

The contents of the new M: drive will actually be the contents of my desktop folder.

Sysinternals Desktops v1.0 allows you to create up to four virtual desktops and to organize your applications on the different desktops. Browse the web on one desktop, read your e-mail on a second desktop and organize your work applications (Word, Excel, Photoshop, etc.) on another desktop.
You can easily switch between the different desktops using the tray icon with preview or using configurable hotkeys.

What makes Desktops different from other virtual desktop applications is the way it has been implemented. Desktops uses a separate Windows desktop object, running its own explorer.exe instance, for each desktop, rather than faking virtual desktops by hiding applications.
Application windows are bound to one desktop object when they are created. This approach has some advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:
- Desktops is lightweight and very fast
- Desktops actually works and seems bugfree. All other tools I've tried had issues with inconsistencies between desktops (application windows showing up on the wrong desktop, etc.)
- No installation required. Desktops can be run from a USB key.

Disadvantages:
- Applications cannot be moved from one desktop to another
- Most tray icons are only visible on the first desktop
- Switching between applications using Alt+Tab only works on the first desktop
- The same desktop background for all desktops
- Vista Aero is only available on the first desktop

Although the list of disadvantages is longer than the list of advantages, Sysinternals Desktops v1.0 is one impressive tool. But I didn't expect anything else from Sysinternals.

I have always wanted this kind of software. I have thousands of mp3 songs packed in various partitions of my hard disk. I have collected these songs from several places and keep them storing, but the problem while augmenting my collection is that I am never sure whether I have copied the set of songs before or not, so I just copy them irrespective of the fact that they may be already present. The consequence is that my hard disk space is almost filled with duplicate files

This is a trick by which you can make any icon invisible and can access it in the invisible state only ..... Its not altering the properties to hidden ...... Here are the steps : 1. Locate the icon and then right click ..... go to properties .... then go to customize tab ..... there will be a transparent(invisible) icon as shown in the screenshot .... select it and click on Apply.....

Speed up the Start Menu

The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up.

If this doesn't work for some reason, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow. You will get much better overall performance.

Delete files when the Recycle Bin is hidden

By default, the Windows XP Recycle Bin sits at the bottom right of the desktop, just above the tray notification area and system clock. If you've got many floating windows open, however, it's possible to obscure the Recycle Bin and make it impossible to drag files and folders there for deletion. However, you can automatically hide all of those open windows during a drag operation. The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke. But it's not. Instead, it's a cool hidden feature of XP.

Here's how it works: Make sure a bunch of windows are open on the screen, with at least one of them hiding the Recycle Bin. Then, find a file or group of files you'd like to drag to the Recycle Bin. Pick up the files with the mouse and move them to the lower right of the screen. As you reach the bottom area of the screen, pass the mouse cursor over a blank area of the task bar, hover there for an instant, and the open windows all minimize, leaving the Recycle Bin available to accept the dragged files. Good stuff. This tip also works when windows are maximized, assuming the file(s) you want to delete are visible in one of the available windows.

we know very well about the famous Google talk’s “show my current music status” and might be using it without any problem in Winamp although WMP needs an in activation. But after installing the latest version of Winamp 5.5, I had a few problems with the Google talk Integration.

Whenever you select the Show my current music track, Google talk either freezes or stops responding. This is actually a technical issue with Google talk or Winamp which is yet to be discovered but many users who have upgraded to Winamp 5.5 are facing this problem, so one of a guy has posted a simple resolution for fixing this bug.

The solution is:

Step 1: Go to the root directory of Winamp which is usually in C:\Program Files\Winamp\

Step 2: Select Tools->Folder Options->View (Tab) and uncheck the hide extensions for known file types and click Ok.

Step 3: Now create an empty file (Right click the mouse -> New -> Text document), so the default file would be like “New Text Document.txt”.

Step4: Rename the above file to “winamp.m3u” and save.

Step5: Close Winamp and Google Talk. Now open again and Your Show Current music track status should work like a charm

Despite all its quirks, Windows does do some things for a good reason. Some files need to be locked down when they are in use, otherwise you risk damaging the file or harming the Operating System. Unfortunately Windows XP seems to be plagued by files that cannot be deleted. These are frequently simple files like videos (AVI), MP3s or other seemingly harmless files. You try to delete the file, Windows waits a few seconds before announcing that access is denied, the file is currently in use and cannot be deleted. However, you know it's not in use and you just want it deleted.

If you have encountered this problem, here is a step-by-step process for trying to purge the files you can't delete. It starts with the basics for Windows XP and moves on to more involved tricks. The process will work for all recent Windows releases, but Windows XP has been causing the most the problems, so we will focus on it. Please note: we are assuming that the file is not crucial to the operation of Windows - deleting important system files can cause havoc.

Is the file in use? It sounds obvious but it happens. If it is being used or open, close the file and the application that opened it. For example, if it is a Word document, close Microsoft Word.
If the file was opened in an application (and subsequently closed), but the program is still running, try quitting the program. Windows will lock a file because the application hasn't yet released it. This is not always Windows fault and can be the fault of the program.
If the file is an AVI, in particular a DivX AVI, try renaming it and then deleting it. DivX files don't get on very well with Windows XP and sometimes renaming the file can trick Windows into releasing it.
Reboot your PC and don't start any programs. Go directly to the file and delete it.
In Windows Explorer, switch to View-Details and then select View-Choose Details. Uncheck everything except the file name. This stops Windows XP trying to read the file - this problem affects many video, audio and graphics files.
Still no luck? OK, here is the best trick of all. Most sites give you cryptic Windows registry and DOS commands to remove a file, but the answer is so much simpler. Get a copy of MoveOnBoot. It's free and this simple tool allows you to Move, Copy or Delete files before Windows can lock or alter the files. The changes are made to your hard drive before Windows starts, hence it requires a restart of your system after you give MoveOnBoot its instructions. There are no messy boot or DOS commands, just a simple 3-step process.

Step 1: Locate the name of the file that is causing your problems.

Step 2: Decide if you want to copy, move or delete the file.

Step 3. Choose a destination for moving the file, or a new file name for the rename option (this option won't appear if you are deleting a file).

Click OK to confirm you want to process. The nice thing is that the program doesn't make you reboot straight away. It's a good idea to reboot ASAP, but if you are in the middle of something and want to wait, the program will simply run next time you start Windows.
If the file reappears again (check its creation date to ensure it is being recreated) and you can't make it budge, you may have trouble with spyware or a virus on your system (don't overlook the possibility it may also be an important system file). In this case you should get a good spyware removal program to scan your system.

Some time or the other, you must have used cyber dafe or public computers to access internet or mail. Public computers are most prone to password hacking. Anyone can simply install a keylogger software to hack your password. Keylogging is one of the most insidious threats to a user's personal information. Passwords, credit card numbers etc.

It is now very easy for the keylogger to harvest passwords. Each and every keystroke (whatever you type on the keyboard) gets recorded in the keylogger software and the person installing it can easily view what you have typd in.

For example, if you go to hotmail.com and check your mails. Say your ID is aaabbbccc @ hotmail . com and password is snoopy2. the keylogger software records your usename and password in its log file as

www.hotmail.comaaabbbccc @ hotmail . comsnoopy2

Risky isnt it???!!!

There's solution to this problem and you can easily fool the hacker.
The keylogger software sees and records everything, but it doesn't understand what it sees. It does not know what to do with keys that are typed anywhere other than the password or user name fields.

So, between successive keys of the password if you enter random keys, the keylogger software wont ever come to konw where you typed in what..

In the process of recording the keys, the string that the keylogger receives will contain the password, but embedded in so much random junk that discovering it is infeasible.

So...

1.Go to hotmail.com or yahoo.com or any of the site where you need to insert a password or PIN.
2.Type in your user ID.
3. Type in the first characterof the password.
4. Click on the address bar in the internet explorer or Firefox. Type in some 3/4 random charachters.
5. Again go to password field and type in the second character of the password.And probably third too.
6. Again go to the addressbar and type in a few mroe random character.
7. Back to the password field and the next characters of the password.

Keep on repeating the process till you type in the full password in the password field.

Instead of the password
snoopy2 the keylogger now gets:
hotmail.comspqmlainsdgsosdgfsodgfdpuouuyhdg2

Here a total of 26 random characters have been inserted among the 7 characters of the actual password!!!

No doubt it takes a little bit of more time than the usual process, but you're safe and secure that way!!!

Usually the port number is "4443" and i noticed sometimes it doesn't work so i am guessing it is because that the person has a firewall. So here is the script.

open notepad and enter the following:

then save as "GetIp.cmd" and when opened you will view all established connections. And here is the rest of it.

We all have been through countless sign ups from simple username, email id and password to really complex ones which requires more that magic wand ! One thing that is common to all is the risk of exposing to your email id to plague of spam.

Now we could read the privacy policy each time, before sharing our mail id but whats the fun in that ?

A simple solution is have a temporary email id or a disposable mailbox that is active for sometime just to confirm that stupid mail !

Here are the places you can do just do that create a temp mail id!

Dontreg- This is as simple as it can get just add @dontreg.com the mail id you wish to give the potential spammer e.g temp.mail.id@dontreg.com then go to dontreg.com enter the id presto you get the mail !

Now because the id is not secure(ie doesn't require login) anyone can get your mails only by entering your id so choose the enter the temporary email user id wisely !

myTrashmail- If you want something a little more secure to access the temporary mail then myTrashmail is the place ! you can get the usual quick temporary mail id or the secure one ! Do remember the secure one require sign up and you need to enter a mail id !

Once signed up you can create a temp mailbox and access the mail by logging in !

More options include mailexpire , temporaryinbox and tempomail.fr

The problem with temp mail id's is that they may be blacklisted and the registration may not accept them hence you need to be on a look out for a new domain name! mailinator.com tries to address that problem by giving many domain names !

Well the awesome screen shot of the desktop was mine until I realised the reason we have a messy desktop is it so easy to access and we go on adding stuff untill we get the annoying windows clean my desktop wizard like an unwanted House keeping knock on a cheesy motel !

Not any more....also check out a way to launch your fav programs faster than searching in start menu !

Well here is how we do it, we are going to create an alternative to desktop !

1) Create a folder which will be your alternative to desktop.

I strongly recommend that you create this Folder other than C: as a matter of fact you should not be using C: to store any personal file since if you need to format your C: all the personal file will be lost !

I am going to call this folder Quickdesk

Make it hidden (By right click properties)

2) Add quickdesk to task bar

This is best way to access the quickdesk since it will contain folders (such as Music, Movies, Photos etc)

To add Rightclick on Taskbar > Toolbars > New Toolbars
Then browse to the location where you have quickdesk. This adds a toolbar by which you can directly go to the place where you want to go.

As you start using this you will realise how productive this way is !

(Just in case you are wondering what are those folders, there are not default. These are the folders created earlier)

3) Create a shortcut of Quickdesk
You can do this by the usual method by Right - click on the folder Create short cut and then rename the Shortcut to Quickdesk.

Now to add some style choose a icon for the Shortcut By Right click > Properties > Shortcut tab > Change Icon. You can even choose a fancy one by clicking browse.

4) Copy the shortcut to Desktop

We are adding a shortcut to desktop for one main reason is access the quickdesk while Uploading or dowloading you don't have to browse for Quickdesk instead just go to desktop and click on Quickdesk icon which will take you to the Quickdesk folder.

5) Add this short cut to your Quick launch

You can add to Quick lauch by dragging the Shortcut from desktop to the quick launch.

This will be the fastest way to access the Quickdesk !
If you don't have the Quick launch toolbar than you can add that by Right clicking the taskbar > Toolbars > Quick launch

6) Copy to windows folder

Copy Quickdesk short cut to windows folder ( By default c:\windows) so that we can launch by the run (windows + R ) or start > Run

Just by typing quickdesk and clicking run will launch the folder.
You can use this method for launching folders inside the quickdesk folder.

How to Start using ?

The idea is to use shortcuts to organise the most accessed data we have. We keep our data disorganised to different reasons such as space availability, convenience etc. So while your Music might be in some folder in d: your photos in several different place !

Create folders for each type of category. Photo, Movies, Videos, Music, downloads to name a few !

Here comes the Oh yeah moment !

So assume you have songs in a folder in d:\somefolder\morefolder\thefolder\songs (even somplace on your network !)

To make it accessible fast create a shortcut on Music folder by Rightclick > New >Create shortcut

I even changed the icon of the shortcut to a much more appropriate !

Now check out how easy this is to access in the screen shot below !

Now in winamp to play it just got to desktop > Quickdesk > Music > songs shortcut !

Talking about Winamp you can even launch application like this !

We all know what pain in the neck it is to Go to start and wait till the Ram deficient CPU displays the list of programs and then search the one you want ! Keeping the shorcuts on the desktop also adds to clutter to startwith !

To add Application to Quickdesk, copy the shortcut from the desktop or program files and paste it in the :Quickdesk\programs

Now check out how east and FAST it is to launch this way !

Go to this location..

There you'll find a file by the name "hosts". Open this file using notepad.
The last line of this file will look like this..

"127.0.0.1 localhost"

Now below this line add this..
"127.0.0.1 xxxxxxxx"
(Where xxxxxxxx is the website that you want to block on your computer.)

Now save the file.. If having difficulty in saving the file change the properties of the file. Its default might be set as "Read-Only"

P.S. do not write http://_______ before website name

First you should goto :

start-- > run-- > eventvwr.msc

Events are stored in three log files: Application, Security, and System. These logs can be reviewed and archived.
For our purposes we want the System log. Click on "System" in the left-hand column for a list of events.
Look for a date and time when you weren't home and your computer should have been off.

Double click on the eg: info and it will show u the detail.

You can also use this log to see how long someone was on the computer. Just look at the time the computer was turned on and off for that day.

Before you install:-
This is a Beta Version only for blogger platform. We assume you have the template layout feature in your blogger and not classic version. If not you can upgrade to template by doing this.

Backup your Template before any change. You can restore if things don't workout.
To do this Go to Template > Edit Html

Then click on Download Full Template to backup.A xml file will be downloaded This is your template.
To restore upload the same xml by browsing for the file and then clicking Upload

Here are the steps to install Comment Box on your blogger web log !

1) Click on the bellow button to install the widget.

Many blogs and websites feature "navigation button" links like a menu at the top of the page or beneath the header. This can be really helpful for readers to navigate to areas of interest in your blog, such as the home page, about page and contact links.

To create these buttons for your blog, we don't need to use any external images!

There are two main steps to creating these buttons for your blog:

1. Add some styling code to your blog's template
2. Create a new HTML/Javascript widget, and create your links

You can use these links anywhere in your blog that you are able to place an HTML/Javascript widget, such as your sidebar, the header section, or above your blog posts.

Here are the steps in detail:

Add some code to the style section of your blog template

The "style" section of "layouts" blogs is contained between the b:skin> and /b:skin> tags in your template. The simplest way to add extra styling code is to place this just before the closing tag (key CTRL+F to easily find this in your template).

The styling code used for the buttons featured above is as follows:

If you prefer, you can change the color of the backgrounds to colors which better suit your blog.

Create your links in an HTML/Javascript widget

Once you have added this style code to your template, you should save your template and go to the layouts section of your blog (Template>Layout). Here you should create a new HTML/Javascript widget where you would like your buttons to appear.

In this new widget, you should add your links in the following format:

Be sure to replace "http://your-link-url.blogspot.com" with the URL of the post page (or link) you would like the button to link to, and replace the link text (eg: Your Link) with the text you would like to display.

Click your domain name and you’ll be presented with DNS and other configuration options for the domain. Make sure you can see your freehostia website when you type in your domain name.

5. But to install Wordpress, you’ll need to create a database. Choose Mysql Databases from Control Panel Home, and give a name to the DB like wordpress. Type in a password to use with the new database and click create. You have now created the MySQL DB needed to setup wordpress.

5. Go back to the home of your CP, and choose Elefante Free Scripts under the Web Tools directory. Choose Wordpress and you’ll be taken to the Wordpress installation page. Press Install Wordpress link from that page and you’ll be given a chance to do some customization and stuff. The fields of importance include admin login and password which will be used by you to update your blog and administer.
Pay attention to the path if you want your visitors to see your wordpress blog instantly when they type in your URL, type a single / in that field. and press continue, you are done !

Expandable Post Summaries

Expandable Post Summaries is the method by which each blog post consists of a short paragraph of introduction followed by a 'Read More' link. This enables the reader to get a small introduction to each post on the main page. He can then click the Read More link if he gets sufficiently interested........

Many bloggers have reported confusion when they tried to follow the instructions on the official blogger help page for this hence I have tried to put the help in more easy to follow terms here. There are basically three steps to follow if you want to implement expandable post summaries in the new layouts template.

The first step is to put the code for the conditional css. This changes how posts display on different pages. To do this login to Dashboard and click on Layout for your blog. Then click on Edit Html and first backup your template by using the Download Full Template link. Then scroll down till you come to tag and add the following code immediately above it :

Save Template.

"READ MORE" LINKS

The second step is to add the Read More links which will appear after the paragraph summaries. To do this put a check in the Expand Widgets Template checkbox at the top of the Edit Template text box.

NOTE : If you do not put a check in Expand widgets template checkbox at the top of the TEMPLATE CODE BOX you will not see this code.

This is in the Edit Html subtab of Template tab. Then scroll down in the code till you come to the Blog Posts Widget code where locate this line of code :

Add the code below immediately after the above code :

Save Template. This link will only appear on the main page and archive pages, and it will redirect your reader to the post page containing the full text of your post.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Do not use any other code or it will give error.

You can also add your Post Title at the end of the Read More link so that it will read "Read More on "My Best Post"!"

POST MODIFICATIONS

The last step is to modify the post template so that each post when created will show you where to place your summary paragraph and where to place the rest of the post. To do this go to Settings------>Formatting and scroll down to the end of the page to the box for the Post Template. Copy and Paste the following lines there :

Save Settings. When you click on Create Post and then Edit Html tab of Post Editor you will see the following

Replace the line "Here is the beginning of my post." (Type your summary here) with your summary paragraph. Then replace the line "And here is the rest of it." (Type rest of the post here.) with the rest of your post. Then click Publish to publish post.

CREATING YOUR POSTS

Login to Blogger.com and click on +New Post link on Dashboard. Creat ur Post now....

Before publishing make sure that the two span (code) lines are present and the line is at the bottom and the span=readmore line in between your summary post and the second half of the post.

How To Copy Widgets from one template to another

When you choose a new default Blogger template, all of your widgets are copied over to the new template. However, if you try to upload a customized template (such as the ones featured here), you will probably get a message asking if you want to delete most of your existing widgets. It is often asked "how can I copy my widgets over to a new template?", so in this tutorial will share the method used to do this quickly and painlessly.

Your blog widgets are saved in your Blogger account, rather than in the actual template of the blog. The widgets are called to your blog by anchors within the template which look like this:

As you can see in this example, each widget in your blog is given a unique identity (in this case, "HTML1") and a title, which is the same as the title you provide when you create the widget.

If you upload a template to your blog which contains the same widget identifiers, then the widgets will be called from your account by the template, and will display in your blog as normal. On the other hand, if you upload a template which does not contain the same widget identifiers, you will be prompted to delete widgets from your account.

So to ensure you can maintain your widgets from your existing blog template in your new blog template, we must copy these widgets over to the new template before uploading this to your blog.

The method I use to accomplish this is by using a second "test blog". I have explained all about creating and using a test blog in this post. If you don't already have a test blog available to use, you will need to create one temporarily to help you copy your widget identifiers over to your new template. Once you have created your test blog, here is the method for copying over your widgets from your old template to your new one:

Log in to your Blogger dashboard.
You will need to be able to edit both your existing blog template and your test blog template, so it's advisable to have two browser windows (or tabs) open at the same time. You can easily do this by keying CTRL+N to bring up a new page. So for the moment your Blogger dashboard will be available in both browser windows.
Now, in the first browser window, select your test blog and go to Template>Edit HTML. Click on the "Upload New Template" link near the top of the page and upload the new XML template you wish to adapt for your main blog. Once this template has uploaded, deselect the "expand widget templates" box.
In the second browser window, select your existing blog template and again go to Template>Edit HTML. Do NOT check the "expand widget templates box", as this will make things much easier for you. Now, locate the widget content identifiers in your template sidebar. Most likely, the section will look something like this: The code featured inside the red box displays the identifying code for your widgets, which calls the widgets to appear in your blog. You need to copy all of these sections to yout clipboard, or paste into Notepad for easy editing in a few moments.
Once you have copied the widget identifiers from your old template, go back to the browser window in which you can edit your new template.
Find this section in your blog template:

If there are any widgets defined here, it is advisable to delete them. Otherwise you may end up with duplicated widgets. Then in their place, paste the widget codes from your old template:

If there are no widgets present in the sidebar of your new template, the code may look like this instead:

In this case, you should delete the trailing slash from the end of the line (highlighted in red). Make a line break then paste your widget content as before. Then finally create another line break and add the following line:

The finished result should look something like this:

IMPORTANT! Do not preview your template at all during this process! If you do, you run the risk of duplicating the widgets which will cause you many problems. This seems to be a glitch on Blogger's behalf rather than an error of this method. In any case, do not preview the template.

At this point, you should save the test blog template, after which you can view your blog in the normal manner. You will notice that no widget content is actually showing, only the widget titles. This is perfectly normal: as I mentioned earlier, the widget content is stored in the settings for your original blog.

Okay, now we have copied over the widgets, we can download the XML template ready to transfer over to the original blog. To do this, go to Template>Edit HTML and select "Download full template" near the top of the page. Save the template to your computer with a name you can easily identify.

Now back to the other browser window where you should have the Edit HTML page for your original blog still on the page. Here you should look for the "upload new template" section near the top of the page. Browse for the template you just downloaded from your test blog and upload it. You should NOT receive any error messages, like this: If you do see such error messages, take note of the widgets the template wants to delete, then choose to cancel the process. You should then copy the appropriate widgets from the old template into the new template in your test blog (as before), save the template and attempt to upload it again.

If you receive no error messages, your template will be saved, and you can now view your new blog template with all your old widgets still in place. You can then move the widgets around however you wish in the Layouts section of your dashboard.
